Survey and demarcation of Abatiku MPA and underwater cave in Abemama to strengthen the Community-Based Fishereis Management Plan.
A team of 5 staffs from Coastal Fisheries Division had returned from Abatiku, the islet of Abemama from conducting a survey and the demarcation on the Marine protected area (MPA) and the cave from 16th to 23rd August 2019.
The purpose of this work is to assess the baseline of the giant clam at the proposed MPA and the cave for later monitoring and for setting an official boundary for these sites for incorporation into the Fisheries management plan and the Marine Spatial Planning Map before they are physically deployed with buoys.
The work also extends to promote eco-tourism in order to capitalize these natural resources for income generation to the community and for effective conservation such as in the use of recreational areas for sustainable livelihood.
The team also reported that there is abundance in fish species such as emperor fish, parrot fish at the underwater cave site which can attract the tourists.
The selected site for an MPA is based on the concern raised from Abatiku community regards to the fishing of the giant clam from all the villagers in the whole island of Abemama is mostly done in Abatiku, hence there is a need to protect the giant clam resource before it is depleted. In this way the marine food resources for Abatiku community will be protected.
“In order to sustain our food security, there is a need to establish an MPA” Kautoa Teakoi, the village leader said. “Since it is known of its delicacy in which Kiribati rely on as their main diet and also one of the major sources of income for this community” Rateiti Vailmalie from Fisheries Division reported.
In the report the team highlighted that Tridacna maxima species (te were) commonly found in the area while other species such as Hippopus hippopus (neitoro) and Tridacna gigus (kima) present in low number. The whole area demarcated for the MPA has a total area of 600,230 square meter or 0.6 square kilometers in size.
Surveying this proposed site provides the snapshot of current status of clam with the expectation to get back for monitoring purposes in 1 year to check whether or not the protected sites is working for clam resource conservation.
The trip was supported by the LDCF-I project and funded by the Global Environment Facility through the United Nations Programme. It is managed by the Environment and Conservation Division under the MELAD.

The formal handing over of the boat to Abemama island council from LDCF-I to enhance the conservation of the marine resources.
Officials from the Local Government – MIA and the Coastal Fisheries – MFMRD had returned from Abemama one of the pilot island under LDCF-I project after a formal handing over of the boat to the island council on the 5th December 2019.
The purpose of this aid is to assist the project in protecting and conserving of the marine resources such as in the enforcement of bonefish bylaws, protecting of the MPAs, cultivating of giant clams and sandfish, ark shell survey and other project activities.
The Mayor, the Clerk and the councilors, and some government officials were attending this event. The mayor gave his words of thanks to the LDCF-I project for providing the boat to their island council. He also said that, the boat will aid them in enhancing the enforcement of the bylaws or regulation for the marine resources and to boost the activity of LDCF-I project.
The Assistant Secretary from the MIA in his words challenged the island councils to use and keep the boat well as it is another asset that is very expensive. The Deputy Director from the Coastal Fisheries Division gave his remarks to and stressed to the island council that this boat is very crucial for the monitoring of the marine resources.
After the speeches, cutting of the cake was carried out by these 3 parties, the Mayor, The Assistant Secretary and the Deputy Director from Coastal Fisheries Division. This is to show their gratitude and collaboration to use wisely and keep it properly.
The last important part of this event was the counter sign between these 3 parties on the agreement to notify their roles and responsibilities in looking after this island council asset.

Training to enhance the capacity of the vulnerable communities and established guest houses on Abemama on sustainable tourism.
The training carried on the 1st – 15th December 2019 in Abemama by Officials from TAK was another part of capacity building development program to support the gamefishing initiative as part of the eco-tourism venture on the island.
Under the LDCF-I project Abemama is one of the pilot islands targeted to earn $5,000.00 per year from the gamefishing initiative as a way to generate income from the coastal zone resources sustainably. It is also to motivate the locals for coastal fisheries conservation.
The expectation from this training is to get the locals ad communities prepared from the knowledge shared on the tour guiding, baking and hospitality services, housekeeping customer service and Front Office when the whole island is due to be opened up to international markets for fly fishing games. Therefore, they can organize their tour activities and programs.
2 villages and 2 hotels were covered in this hotel businesses training which are Reina, Baretoa the council and Taotin hotel in the training and hotel businesses. Abatiku and Tabiang were covered in the consultation on ecotourism and how to develop the ecotour program and packages.
Overall participants who attended the training and consultation was totalled up to 92 which 35% are men and 64% are women.
The training will also encourage the community people to actively engage in reviving any food conservation methods as well as valuing their cultural aspects and land and marine environments which can become parts of the tour programs and itineraries.
The training was supported by the Kiribati LDCF-I Project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented under the Environment and Conservation Division (ECD-MELAD) with the support of the United Nations Development Programme.
