Welcome to MELAD website
The Ministry has four divisions all working together in accomplishing its goals and objectives set in its Strategic plan. The Ministry in its portfolio also has the Phoenix Island Protected Area implementing office which coordinates work for implementation in Kanton. The 4 components of MELAD are mainly the Environment Conservation Division, Land Management Division and the Agriculture & Livestock Division all cooperated in one service and managed by one Secretary and Honorable Minister. MELAD headquarters is located in Bikenibeu comprising of four units which are the Admin, Planning & Project unit, Account unit, and IT unit. These four units work as one in delivering efficient and effective administrative MELAD services to the public
Environment Conversation
Anything we do to protect our planet and conserve its natural resources so that every living thing can have an improved quality of life.
Land Management
We are managing the use and development (in both urban and rural settings) of land resources. Land resources are used for a variety of purposes which may include organic agriculture, water resource management and eco-tourism projects.
Agriculture & Live Stock
Increasing domestic production through improved support services and promotion of sustainable agriculture in close collaboration with relevant stakeholders and development partners with the ultimate goal of improving the well being of te I-Kiribati
KOIFAWP
The aim of the Project is "people living in outer islands communities have healthy and sustainable livelihoods". The Results and Impact Management System (RIMS) indicators linked to the Project aim are 'improved food security, child health and nutrition status'
Phoenix Islands Protected Area
The Phoenix Islands Protected Area, passionately referred to as the PIPA was first discovered in 1999 by the international scientists led by Dr. Gregory Stone of the New England Aquarium (NEAq) based in Boston Massachusetts, US.
